The Social Housing Energy Management project commenced in December 2010 and is comprised of three partners; Narec (as the lead partner), South Tyneside Homes and Homes for Northumberland.  The project will benefit from £1.9 million of investment from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

The ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-2013 is bringing over £300m into the North East to support innovation, enterprise and business support across the region.

Narec is working in partnership with the two social landlord partners who are undertaking housing energy improvement schemes on properties within their portfolio which are considered ‘hard to treat’. Low carbon, renewable and innovative products are to be installed in the selected properties.  Throughout the project, the impacts of the interventions will be monitored and analysed covering both technological and social impacts.

In parallel to the retrofit improvement scheme, the project aims to deliver a programme of SME capacity building for those active, or with the potential to diversify into the microgeneration and low carbon technology market.  Support for SMEs includes both business wide and individual skills development and knowledge transfer assistance wrapped within a tailor-made programme of support to meet the needs of the SME.

Deliverables:

The project will work towards supporting 88 regional small and medium enterprises to diversify or grow their business within the low carbon technology market.  This will take the form of bespoke tailored support for businesses to cover;

As a result of this SME capacity building programme, the aim is for over half to demonstrate an improvement in business performance.  The project is aiming to create 25 new jobs within the region and safeguard 82 jobs.

In addition to the hard outputs associated with the SME engagement programme, the collection and dissemination of project data from the retrofit programme is a key deliverable of the project.  It is expected that through the dissemination of these findings there will be a better knowledge flow between low carbon projects and industry.  It is also anticipated that improvements identified through the project will help stimulate the demand for low carbon products.

Key Achievements To Date:

To date, the project is working with over 20 SMEs with business support and over 25 individuals within SME’s with their skills development.

Data gathering equipment has been installed in 10% sample of properties involved in the retrofit scheme.  A good response has been received from residents involved in the 10% monitoring sample.

Build has started on a small number of properties.
