Public Consultation to take place for Project Nautilus

Narec (the National Renewable Energy Centre) has announced further details of its new marine test facility under development at the Narec site in Blyth, ahead of the submission of a formal planning application.

The £15million marine test rig – with supporting infrastructure, software modelling capability and technical expertise - will satisfy the growing demand from industry for specialist marine renewables drive train development. 

Nautilus will de-risk in-field activities by allowing Narec to perform certification activities, reliability and performance appraisal of new devices in Blyth. Based around the existing dry docks, there will be no comparable open-access R&D facilities elsewhere in the world. 

Nautilus will significantly enhance the UK’s technology development capability in this area, enabling the growth of the industry, and underpin its ambition to see significant deployment of technology by 2020 and beyond. 

The project is supported by government, One North East and the European Regional Development Fund 2007-13. 

As part of preparations for the planning application, Narec is holding consultation events to allow the public an opportunity to view and comment on the plans for the building before they are submitted. 

A drop-in event is being held in the Keel Row Shopping Centre in Blyth on Thursday 8 July and Friday 9 July between 10.30am and 3pm.
