Proving Reliability Offshore
Narec is working with industry to reduce product costs and development timeframes and improve the reliability of technology offshore.
Hann-Ocean Technology
Narec conducted cross correlations and evaluation tests of its hydrodynamic, mechanical and electrical performance to predict how the Drakoo III wave energy converter device would react when deployed in the open sea.
Prediction of tidal turbine loads through flow measurement and numerical modelling
Following a 6 week tidal flow measurement programme using DCP technology at the EMEC Tidal Test Facility, Narec has developed a fully validated numerical tool that can predict environmental loads transmitted to a tidal turbine drive train when deployed in the open sea. Simulations of the forces and moments that a tidal turbine drive train will experience in real flows were undertaken to inform the design and operation of the facility’s Force Application System (FAS).
In addition to furthering industry understanding of the interaction between an operational turbine and its environment, this tool will be used to inform accelerated lifetime testing on the 3MW Drive Train Test Facility.
Tekmar Energy
Narec performed prototype, demonstration and factory acceptance trials on Tekmar Energy’s unique cable protection system (TEKLINK®) for offshore wind turbines. TEKLINK® will help to improve the resilience and longevity of underwater cable connections as well as reducing offshore wind turbine installation costs.
Project Snapper
Project Snapper, an FP7 research and development project funded by the European Commission and coordinated by Narec investigated improvements in marine energy recovery through the development of a novel, low cost, high efficiency rare-earth magnet linear generator for marine wave energy extraction, capable of generating electricity from wave energy with an ultimate target cost of €0.15/kWh.
This two-year project concluded in August 2011 and the consortium are now planning the next stages of development. The project has been shortlisted as a finalist in the IET Innovation Awards 2011.
