Intelligent Energy Network

An understanding of intelligent energy networks will be vital to enable the integration of new systems to accommodate how users will behave and what the potential contribution to system stability could be.

New electrical loads anticipated from electric vehicle charging are adding to the concerns of network owners, who are currently tackling the challenges associated with variable generation from the expansion of renewables.

With an increased burden expected on supply systems, demand side management could provide part of the solution through the deployment of control signals, such as flexible electricity prices, to provide an incentive for the user to automatically adjust their non-critical demand accordingly.

Smart meters and the design of intelligent homes are some of the major enablers that require significant investment at the low voltage and user end of the power system. Local generation by individual property owners and from new community schemes is predicted to increase dramatically over the next few years.

Utilisation of energy storage will be vital in maintaining the stability of the electricity networks, where there is a high penetration from variable output renewable generation sources. A paradigm shift is required from the passive electrical network, which currently exists, to combat the twin threats of climate change and energy security.

Narec works with technology developers, network operators and industry regulators to identify, investigate and understand issues around network integration and operational characteristics of new power technologies under ‘real world’ conditions, prior to connection to the public electricity network.
