Narec has the only full-scale blade testing facility in the UK, with a capability developed over the last five years, which serves the global wind supply chain and industrial research community. This bespoke blade testing facility in North East England has quayside delivery access and can be deployed for single and multiple resonant frequency fatigue testing and static load and strength tests (to failure if required).
Funding has now been secured from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and Department for Energy and Climate Change (£11.5m) and Regional Development Agency One North East (£3.5m) to build an additional larger blade testing facility for testing offshore turbine blades of up to 100m in length. This will be operational in 2011.
All services are provided under strict client confidentiality conditions and to relevant quality assurance and industry standards. Narec is currently working towards ISO 17025 international standards for testing facilities and can perform to IEC TC 61400-23 with witness accreditation available.
Narec has also developed dual axis testing technology which allows quicker, more realistic dynamic ‘lifecycle' performance analysis to mimic the movement of the blade in field conditions. Individual programmes can be designed to suit client requirements.
