Narec has been awarded an Agreement for Lease from The Crown Estate for its proposed offshore demonstration facility, with a capacity to accommodate up to 15 large-scale pre commercial wind turbines in the North Sea off Blyth, Northumberland.

Subject to the provisions of The Crown Estate Act 1961, ‘the intention is to foster, encourage and support development in new offshore wind technology in the UK for demonstration purposes, with a view to implementation in existing and future commercial rounds of offshore wind farms.’
The Crown Estate launched a process of engagement with industry on offshore wind technology demonstration site needs in May 2009.
Following this, in September 2009, the Crown Estate invited applications for the lease of sites for offshore wind farm demonstration projects within the UK Renewable Energy Zone, UK territorial waters and UK internal waters (maximum 20Km2 lease area and rated capacity of up to 100MW).
Narec submitted its application for Demonstrator status at Blyth in December 2009, and in March 2010 Narec were short-listed to attend interviews in London. In August 2010 Narec were awarded demonstration site status at Blyth.
Consequently, Narec plans to develop an offshore wind farm site in the North Sea, comprising pre-consented “pods” (turbine locations), at which tenants may deploy their prototype or demonstration turbines and foundations. It would provide an offshore wind demonstration site with water depth conditions representative of typical Round 3 offshore wind projects.
The project is part supported by government grant funding and is not a commercial project, i.e. the primary aim is to test technologies and learn from experiences in readiness for the challenges of Round 3 and beyond.
