As we move towards zero carbon buildings, it is important to also consider the embedded carbon within the buildings, i.e., the emissions due to the construction of the buildings. This is something which can be measured through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). However, this is an area which many architects require additional training on.

Outline and Objectives

Decerna provided a training course on LCA, in terms of the theory, databases, impact categories, software, and the ISO standards which are used. This was applied to various decisions which architects can make in order to help reduce the environmental impact of buildings

Outcomes

The architects from the six companies were left with a stronger understanding and knowledge of LCA

Funding

This work was funded via the European Regional Development Fund.
